Connie Book remembers sitting anxiously in a station wagon with her family at age 6 sometime in the 1970s. A 2,400-mile drive loomed ahead of them alongside an uncertain future. She was leaving the place she called home, Opelousas, Louisiana, with her parents and eight siblings, in search for a better life. As they pulled away from their cramped three-bedroom home, Book's parents had a conversation she’d never forget. “My mom says to my dad, ‘I’m scared,’” Book said.
