Havana Herald

Newspaper
The Havana Herald and Havana Publishing Company have been is business since 1947. The first issue of the newspaper was published by original owners and founders Jack and Mattie Kate Dudley on February 7, 1947. Jack, just out of the military as an Army officer, had “discovered” Havana while driving around Florida looking for a suitable place to buy or start a newspaper. He had stopped to buy a Coke at a local business and the church chimes were ringing. He thought it was so peaceful that he went home to Birmingham, Alabama and told wife Mattie Kate. After a return trip with her, they decided to start the business and put their University of Alabama journalism degrees to work. They operated the business until 1972, when they decided to sell the Havana Herald but retain the Havana Publishing Company, the commercial printing portion of the operation. Source
