Holt County Independent

The Holt County Independent was first published in 1880 in O'Neill. At 134 years old this is the oldest contious business in O'Neill. The Independent was sold to George A. Miles of Ainsworth in January of 1904. Miles ran the newspaper until his death in 1937 when his two sons Gerald and Fay took control of the paper. The brothers ran the paper together until Fay's death in 1956 when Gerald and his sons Robert (Bob) and George (Shorty) took over. Upon Gerald's passing in 1971 Shorty and Bob ran the paper until 1985 when Shorty bought out Bob and Shorty and his sons Tom and Terry ran the paper until Shorty's passing in 2006.
