There has been considerable publicity from drug busts on the Interstate 94 corridor. Drug “mules” are using the route to move drugs from the West Coast, Kaiser said. What has helped with this fight has been communication among the different law enforcement agencies. Locally, the addition of a county K-9 unit has helped identify drug traffickers. The challenge for the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office is staffing and funding, Kaiser said. The cost to hire and equip an officer is around $150,000.
