The Panola Watchman

Bordered by Louisiana, Panola County covers 842 square miles of rolling plains and hills flanked by the Sabine River. Its population is about 24,000. It is home to numerous freshwater lakes and a prosperous oil and gas industry. Carthage, the county seat, has a population of about 6,800. It is home to the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, which also houses the Tex Ritter Museum. The Jim Reeves Memorial is on the outskirts of Carthage. Reeves and Ritter, seminal country western music figures, were from the nearby unincorporated communities of Galloway and Murvaul, respectively. Apart from annual hall of fame induction ceremonies and concerts, country and gospel music remains a big draw to Carthage, with weekly Country Music Hayride shows at the downtown Esquire Theater.
