A graduate of Hermitage High School, he was trained as an architect at the University of Virginia. A member of the Army National Guard, he worked for Cushman, Darby, and Cushman in Washington, D.C. drafting patent designs. Later, after moving to Charles Town, W.Va. he was employed by One Design in Stephens City, Va. There he developed his interest in solar energy and its design possibilities. He used this knowledge to transform his own home, a stone Spring House, into a modern ecofriendly residence.
