The Southside Sentinel has been serving Middlesex County and the adjacent region for over 110 years. The weekly newspaper began on April 9, 1896, as the Mathews-Middlesex Herald under G. F. Palmer, publisher and editor. He described it as a "weekly journal published in the interest of Middlesex and Mathews and the adjoining counties and devoted to news, agriculture, politics, literature and advertising.
