W.J. Grimes, owner of W.J. Grimes Farms and one of the founding fathers of the Vidalia sweet onion industry, died Nov. 3 at the age of 84 in his Helena, GA, home. Working at W.J. Grimes Farms in McCrae, GA, Mr. Grimes helped bring about controlled atmosphere storage, which was instrumental in allowing grower-shippers to extend their season. With this new method, Vidalia onions that were harvested in April and May could be stored throughout the summer and available much longer.
