A bruising and at times volatile campaign behind him, Labor Member Eddie Hughes had reason to smile. He’s likely beaten the X Factor in Giles by using a little X Factor of his own: his Irish heritage. “It’s St Patrick’s Day, my mum is Irish and my dad is Scottish of Irish descent. I reckon the luck of the Irish was with me in this election campaign,” Mr Hughes said. With 57.8 per cent of the votes counted, Mr Hughes leads Mr Antonio in first preference votes 49.4 per cent to 23.9 per cent.
