The Classic Horror Film Board-Peggy Webling FRANKENSTEIN book
We've updated our Privacy Policy and by continuing you're agreeing to the updated terms. Share with: Link: Member 3,4592,277 Peggy Webling and the Story Behind Frankenstein, The Making of a Hollywood Monster has two subtitles, two authors, and three (count 'em) versions of Webling's Frankenstein play included. I got a lot of out of reading the Deane/Balderston DRACULA play as a waystation in understanding the changes from novel to the '31 film.
The Classic Horror Film Board-Mystery Kong book, circa early 1976
Hey Y’All! I’ve been sorting through a big box of photos I inherited after my Mom died over a decade ago, and I came across one from my birthday in March of 1976. I’ve oriented the pics so the books I’ve just opened can be more plainly seen. I apologize for the resolution… my mom was the photographer and she was known for turning out blurry photographs. I was dressed for my basketball game later on in the afternoon.
The Classic Horror Film Board-PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE (1954)
Re: PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE Mar 29, 2016#652016-03-29T06:38+00:00 Just saw this on TCM the other night for the first time in ages. I used to get this confused with THE MAD MAGICIAN. I had seen both of them for the first time within the same time period, both on afternoon TV broadcasts, then didn't see either for a long time. I knew Karl Malden was in one, and Vincent Price was in one, and Steve Forrest was in one, but I couldn't remember who was in which with whom.
The Classic Horror Film Board-DEMENTIA 13 (1963)
Re: re: Dementia 13 (1963) - which version to buy on DVD? Jan 02, 2007#42007-01-02T20:29+00:00 I can't make that comparison because I haven't seen the DVD version. However, just from looking at the TCM version, there was certainly nothing wrong, that I noticed, in appearance. The quality was clear. The audio fine. It certainly wasn't like a scratchy Monogram film. In short, it seemed clean to me.

The Classic Horror Film Board-Biggest Golden Age Holy Grail?
I'm doing a Thanksgiving commemorative viewing of King Kong, which of course has me what-if'ing about the elusive spider pit sequence... which got me to thinking: What are CHFBers' biggest Holy Grails from the era? The Spider Pit Sequence? Lugosi's Frankenstein Screen test? 1930's The Cat Creeps? London After Midnight? The 1943 Dr. Terror's House of Horrors? The Widgey Newman (aka RW Lotinga) '30s horrors Castle Sinister and Unholy Quest? Any others I've left out?
The Classic Horror Film Board-Vincent Price's DEVIL BAT ape on RIVERBOAT
Stumbled across Vincent Price's 1959 guest shot "Witness no Evil" on the short-lived western series RIVERBOAT starring Burt Reynolds and Darren McGavin. I'd think there are some CHFBers who'd be interested. Price plays a ne'er-do-well (surprise!) animal trapper who brings his latest cargo aboard the riverboat. He's got a vial of special eau de monkey he applies to his targets, and at night his ape (Janos Prohaska) breaks out of the hold to rob them.
The Classic Horror Film Board-The hanged-man dummy in FRANKENSTEIN
Recently this remarkable still from FRANKENSTEIN (1931), showed up on Facebook's Universal Horror & Classic Creatures group, a very worthy site with many rare photos and stills, administered by Mark French. This photo is interesting (and new to me), in that though the hanging body is seen from afar as Frankenstein and Fritz approach it, this closer shot showing the upper part of the head and body is not seen in the film.

Member 3,3962,125 With a couple of days before October 1, I'm carving another space in the CHFB jack o' lantern for those of us who'll be spending some time on Halloween holiday reading. Doesn't matter if you're clawing your way through some chunky Stephen King or you're finding meaning in the pictogram assembly instructions from Ikea for your new guillotine, portcullis or moat. Drop on by, pull up an overstuffed wingback by the fire and let us know what writing's getting you in the spirit.

15 minutes ago#12024-10-14T13:20+00:00 Don't know if there's a topic elsewhere. Finally saw it. It was on IFC channel (who produced it, I think). It was pretty good - BUT - the commercial breaks took the wind out of it. The flick deserves to be seen uninterrupted.

I know it (obviously) takes some critical hits for its unabashed HOUSE OF WAXiness, but I think there's definitely enough good mojo in HOUSE OF WAX to support as good a knockoff as this. Great performance from Vincent Price, a very polished look, and it moves along at a good clip with some nice little set pieces.

I have a modest collection of various posters and lobby cards, and there are some absolute favorite movies where the key art or ad campaign is just so weak I don't even really have much desire to own the paper - mostly I wish there was better out there. A few off the top of my head - The two DR. PHIBES movies, most of the U.S. posters for the Hammer movies are pretty weak, and HOUSE OF WAX had a pretty crummy ad campaign for such a big hit.

Share with: Link: Member 3,3321,990 Hopefully the first theatrical horror release of the year isn't a harbinger of what's to come, 'cause this one's pretty dull. It doesn't even manage to make a haunted suicide forest very atmospheric.

The Classic Horror Film Board-When the movie star reads the audiobook
As of late I've been listening to Mia Farrow read Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby, (it's a total hoot hearing her channel Ruth Gordon as Minnie Castavet), and it got me thinking that a very special class of horror audiobook is when you get the star of the film adaptation reading an original novel unabridged. There aren't a lot of them, but hoping the CHFB brain trust might add to the list to seek out.

The Classic Horror Film Board-Beware! The Blob! (1972)

Every time I watch this on DVD I swear, there had to been scenes missing.
The Classic Horror Film Board-Choose 13 Years to Preserve
Thought experiment - don't worry, it's not happening, but if you HAD to choose one of the following 13 year periods of horror history to save, which would it be? The OG cycle of 1931-1944, or the Silver years of 1957-1970? All genre movies released in the group you don't select are forever destroyed and unavailable. Movies made in years on either side of the extinction zone still exist. So if you choose A, you lose the peak AIP-Poe and Hammer years but still get their dreggy lingerings.

10 minutes ago#402024-01-28T19:58+00:00 I've been enjoying all of the "Filmgroup" Film Masters releases, as Unigon notes, well worth picking up. There is a pretty substantial flub though in C. Or, rather, your mundane present. I love those Tex Avery "House", "Car" etc. "of Tomorrow" shorts. The Classic Horror Film Board-Spooky DREAMS from the BBC 1964
This avant-garde piece won't be for everyone, but I got more creeps out of it than the last five horror movies I've caught at the theater. Delia Derbyshire, best known for the DOCTOR WHO theme, crafted this piece full of electronic drone sounds, and people providing verbal snippets describing their dreams. And they're not "I want to be a movie star" kinds of dreams. They're falling...drowning...pursued by nebulous shapes and stranded on alien landscapes kinds of dreams.

The Classic Horror Film Board-A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER (Roger Zelazny)
Previous Add to memories Share Track Flag Next A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER Loved it to pieces. From 1993, this is one of the most refreshing and charming horror stories I can remember ever reading. Right from the opening, it yanked me down into the world within its story and (toward the end), I started taking breaks to stretch out the experience a bit more. Zelazny had always seemed uneven to me; at his lower points, he's readable if ininspired. But at his peaks, he's one of the greats.
