What was your first job as a journalist?

I worked for my university's newspaper, UNC Charlotte's University Times.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! And I wish I still had one.

How is social media changing news?

We have access to breaking news in near real-time, and we're able to find and investigate sources with a few clicks.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Michael Blomquist

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To provide the community with as much information as possible so individually and collectively the best possible decisions can be made.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I don't, usually.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I work on the road, so a good backpack is critical, as is a charged smartphone. I'm getting better with my video and digital camera.

What's your favorite social network?

500px.com is my new favorite.

Who do you wish followed you?

I was really proud that Michael Hastings followed me, and even responded to my questions. :*( RIP

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I have so many questions! I need to know how things work, why people do what they do. Then I like to share the answers.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but every once and a while I'd submit a snarky piece that the editors would run.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Well, I'm still working on it because it doesn't seem to want to end. (Thank you, Congress.) See: CoalAshChronicles.com.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Over-report, you'll be glad you did when it comes to write.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime is fine, so long as the pitch is made via e-mail.
