Wildfire smoke could create unhealthy conditions for everyone in Whatcom County, according to an air quality alert issued Thursday. In addition, more wildfires are possible according to a fire weather watch for the west slopes of the North Cascades, issued by the National Weather Service Seattle. Lightning and gusty winds are possible Friday. Meteorologists said that a red flag warning was likely.

Normal traffic flow is expected to resume on Interstate 5 near the Alger/Lake Samish Road off-ramp (exit 240) by July 25. Traffic has been reduced in both directions to a single lane, with southbound traffic crossing over to use the northbound lanes. This reduction was created to allow crews to install a fish passage beneath the southbound lanes.

Bellingham police arrest man suspected of rape, assault in tent

A Bellingham Police Department badge. The Bellingham Police Department on Sunday arrested a 41-year-old man currently living in Bellingham on suspicion of rape, assault and unlawful imprisonment. BPD Lt. Claudia Murphy said a person reported to police Sunday morning that they were raped in a tent in a wood line south of Stuart Road the day prior. The person met the man Saturday, and he offered to let them stay in his tent and get food, Murphy said.
