Tim Lethaby is an award-winning regional editor and communications leader with more than 15 years’ experience at the forefront of UK local and regional journalism. Based in Somerset, he has built a reputation for driving editorial innovation, championing community-focused reporting, and leading newsrooms through rapid digital transformation.
As Regional Editor at Newsquest (2021-2025), Tim managed multi-site editorial teams across the South West, including the Somerset County Gazette, Falmouth Packet, Sidmouth Herald and Bridgwater Mercury. He spearheaded a “reader-first” digital strategy that shifted focus away from click-driven content and towards in-depth, trusted local journalism. Under his leadership, the Somerset County Gazette achieved the highest average dwell time in UK regional media (10.35 minutes per user, IPSOS 2024).
Tim also launched a series of editorial innovations, most notably the AI Assisted Reporter programme, designed to strengthen story relevance and boost engagement. He introduced mobile news apps with integrated subscription models and secured contracts for externally funded roles, including the BBC Local Democracy Scheme and the Criminal Justice Reporting Scheme. His work earned recognition from the England and Wales Cricket Board for excellence in county cricket coverage.
Prior to this, Tim served as Regional Editor (South West) at Nub News (2019-2021), overseeing hyperlocal news operations and building teams of Trusted Contributors and What’s On writers to expand community coverage. He also forged sponsorship partnerships with local businesses to support sustainable journalism models.
At Trinity Mirror (2016-2019), Tim edited six weekly newspapers including the Western Gazette, Mid Somerset Series and Somerset Guardian. He launched high-profile initiatives such as Somerset Village of the Year and the Next Generation Somerset Awards, while working closely with commercial teams to grow revenue through editorial-sponsorship partnerships.
Earlier in his career, as Editor at Blackmore Vale Media (2014-2016), he transformed five regional magazines, doubling their audience reach within three years and strengthening community connections through award-winning journalism. He also organised and hosted flagship events including the Blackmore Vale Business Awards and the Taste of Dorset Awards.
Throughout his career, Tim has been committed to professional development and mentorship, training editorial teams to enhance both digital skills and journalistic excellence. His expertise includes digital publishing, subscription monetisation, cross-platform content planning, and data-driven decision-making.
Beyond the newsroom, Tim is a Patron of St Giles Animal Rescue, where he advocates for animal welfare through community outreach and editorial support.
A collaborative leader with a track record of audience growth, revenue innovation, and community impact, Tim continues to explore how trusted local journalism can evolve in the digital age while remaining rooted in the values of accuracy, fairness and public service.
