Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and President Mikheil Kavelashvili were on Thursday introduced to ongoing relief efforts and challenging circumstances following days of heavy snowfall in the country’s western Imereti region, the Government Administration said. During a meeting at the coordination headquarters hosted in the region, the head of the Government was informed of road clearing efforts and remaining issues.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday claimed the United States-based National Endowment for Democracy had funded “harmful activities” in the country, and emphasised reducing foreign funding used in the alleged manner would be “beneficial for the country”. In his remarks, Kobakhidze stressed foreign funding “should not be used to support revolutionary actions or propaganda in specific directions”, which he alleged NED financing had been used for.

Kobakhidze said restoration of electricity supply and utility services to communities was a “priority”, and gave instructions during an emergency coordination meeting for the purpose, the Government Administration said.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday said 70 percent of roads connecting settlements in the Guria region in the west, which has been affected by heavy snowfall over the past several days, had been cleared and essential services, including electricity, restored to thousands of subscribers. In his press comments, the official said 35,000 users had been without electricity as of Monday in the region, with the number reduced to 10,000 following relief efforts.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday said Paweł Herczyński, the European Union Ambassador to the country, was “free to continue his political and electoral campaigning” ahead of the upcoming local self-government elections scheduled for October, but added his alleged pro-opposition statements would have “no impact” on the outcome of the vote.
