the newtown mom and a sandy hook survivor, hector well, mark, even if your child wasn't directly impacted by sandy hook or in incidents like what happened today in tennessee always support conversation, reflection and hope for change. they dropped their child off at school this morning with a book bag never in their lives, expecting them to come back in a body bag in the aftermath of yet another school shooting, scarlet lewis knows the impact of gun violence firsthand. her six year old son, jesse lewis, was killed in the sandy hook shooting fast forward now, 11 years later, according to the gun violence archive, there have been 129 mass shootings just in 2023. that's more shootings than the amount of days so far this year. the most recent and elementary school in tennessee, where three children and three adults were killed each incident, sparking a tough conversation to have at home. now if it's being done for the first time, dr andrew gerber , president of silver hill hospital in new canaan, says to think of your emotions first before your child's putting your own oxygen mask on before you put on your kids oxygen mask, but you need it need to be able to control your own emotional reaction before you can do a responsible job talking to your child. but for families of sandy hook, it's a conversation that's all too familiar. eyewitness news spoke with lewis and jordan's combs was 1/4 grader who survived sandy hook. never really surprised when i see these sort of things anymore. this is something that should never happen. and we're seeing it. it's our normal and it shouldn't be. both have ties to sandy hook. they have different approaches to a solution for gomez, who is now part of the junior newtown action alliance. her answer is policy, particularly with the banning of assault weapons, and in a federal level, we need to stop beating around the bush and pretending that the assault weapon has been in particular, which has been an incredibly controversial piece of legislation in the past would not be extremely effective in curbing this issue. but for lewis, her answer lies a looking at the path of pain leading to this violence back to the root cause of the pain that escalates into the attack, and we're going to have to teach people how to manage that pain. you can actually turn pain into purpose . it's possible it doesn't have to take you down and you don't have to take others down with you. now lewis created her own choose love movement that provides free character, social and development programs for school children and their families. we have more information on her efforts. wfsb.com in the in the studio
