FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (Gray News) — A K-9 in California was struck and killed by a car after he was spooked by illegal fireworks, officials said. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said K-9 Santi was home Saturday night and was being kept inside due to fireworks in the area. K-9 Santi was a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois and served with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office for four years. Around 8:30 p.m., the deputy let Santi into the backyard to go pee.

HADDAM, Conn. — Thousands of Connecticut residents remained without power Monday, nearly 48 hours after a storm struck the state on Independence Day, as Eversource crews worked through rain to restore electricity across the region. Dan Stevens, a chief lineman with Eversource with nearly 25 years of experience, said his team was on standby before the storm hit July 4, anticipating a significant weather event.

PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/Gray News) — A 4-year-old boy from Kentucky died after being injured in a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July, officials said. The Pulaski County Coroner’s Office identified the boy as Rhett Luttrell. The accident happened at about 10 p.m. Saturday while Rhett’s family was shooting off fireworks in Ferguson, Kentucky, the coroner’s office said. A canister of fireworks tilted and struck Rhett in the torso. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

PINE FLAT LAKE, Calif. (KFSN) - A man who was missing for six days after a fishing trip in California was rescued from a remote wilderness area on Independence Day, authorities said. The family of 70-year-old Rondy Packard became concerned after he failed to return from a fishing trip on the morning of June 28. “Really, really, really happy news. We’ve been searching for Rondy Packard for a couple of days now,” said Kathy Curits, lieutenant of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue.

Seventeen years after leaving her home country, she is a cardiac surgeon at Hartford Hospital — a role she says is deeply personal. Al Rameni describes the operating room where she works as something more than a medical space. “I call it the healing temple,” she said.

(AP) - A woman who previously dated Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner said he drunkenly forced her to have sex after she told him to stop, according to a Politico report released Monday. Platner denied the allegation and said he would be considering next steps for his campaign. “Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting but mindful of the political reality it will inflict, we’re taking the time to reflect on the best path forward,” he said in a video released on social media.

BRANFORD, CT. (WFSB) - A Branford man was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the murder of his 12-year-old son and the attempted murder of his teenage daughter last May. 53-year-old Anthony Andrew Esposito, Jr. will serve 40 years for the murder of his son and 20 years consecutively for the attempted murder of his daughter. On May 1st, 2025, Branford police received a call from a woman who said she believed Esposito had killed someone inside his residence.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Speed cameras in three Connecticut highway work zones are now live, and drivers who don’t slow down could soon be picking up a fine. I-95 in West Haven is one of the spots the state is monitoring. Cameras, radar and traffic are all visible at the site. Fueling up at a rest stop on I-95, Jose Mercado-Rodriguez of Fairfield said he first noticed the warning signs and the speed camera driving through the highway work zone in West Haven.

So far, most towns have seen between 1 and 3 inches of rainfall. However, some areas are now over the 3″ mark, as steady rain continues to fall. We’re watching closely for slow-moving downpours to pivot into the state. There’s still a bit of uncertainty as to where those bands of heavier rain will set up, but totals up to 6″ will be possible under these bands.
