much. we got it. now to the growing questions about taking weight loss drugs. during pregnancy or while you're breastfeeding. for the first time, the nation's ob gyns are weighing in with their advice. we're joined by dr rachel psa pollack she's an endocrinologist and clinical professor of medicine at nyu langone health. rachel, good to have you back. i'm so glad you're here because i've heard conflicting things to friends who are. one is pregnant, one is trying to get pregnant. two different doctors, one said it's okay to take them while you're trying an other said absolutely not. so what is the best advice here? what are you here to say? so this is a really important issue, because we know there's an explosion of women that are taking glp that are looking to get pregnant that may unintentionally get pregnant. 40% of pregnancies are unintentional. 40% wow, yeah, 40%, so that we know that women are getting pregnant inadvertently on glp. so we want to be able to give them guidance, and this new guidance from acog says. one to two months before pregnancy, you should stop taking your glp and interestingly, they're also saying after delivery if your baby's 28 days old and healthy, you could consider restarting it. that's not to say we have evidence to support. support that you can use it during breastfeeding. it's to say, this is a really tailored conversation with your clinician. what would happen if you were taking a gop one while you were pregnant? i think we do not have data that really shows an alarming risk of know severe complications during pregnancy, but we also don't have great data saying that it's safe. so the risks right now, yeah. that you would not take a glp and that's consistent across many guidelines that you should not be taking a glp during pregnancy. are there cases where the benefits outweigh the risks? during pregnancy, i would say no, i would say at this point because you know, when you think about glp, they make you feel full right, they reduce your appetite, your nutrition, so the baby potentially can't grow because it's not getting calories potential, vitamin deficiency. you need that because you're eating. two. you're definitely consuming for another that you want to make sure you're getting good protein intake and those types of medications. what about women who are breastfeeding because a lot of people use glp ones? they get pregnant, they're not on it, you put on some weight, you're breastfeeding. can you go back on the glp? you touched on it about 28 days. i don't understand that. so the new guidance suggests that maybe at 28 days, so your baby is no longer a real you know, newborn premi and you're able to consider restarting a glp that's not to say we think it's safe to go on a glp right when you're breastfeeding. it's to say, in certain situations, let's say, somebody with type two diabetes. i really did well with it. you can reconsider it. but we have one study. it's tiny that showed in eight patients it did not go into the breast milk when they took the equivalent to ozempic. but that's not enough data to say that it's okay to start this in breastfeeding women, but it's enough data to say let's talk to your physician maybe if you're still breastfeeding at one year, this should be an option. but we don't know if it reduces your breast milk quantity. you can imagine no nutrition or reduced nutrition. you're not getting good benefit over to the baby. do you want to be careful? what are the downsides? because it seems like when it comes to glp ones, we've heard a lot of the benefits when it comes to some say it reduces alcoholism some say it helps your heart. certainly helps your weight. helps with other urges it helps with other urges. what are the downsides here? i think it's a nutrition during. you could potentially have a smaller. you know, baby during pregnancy. maybe an increased risk of nutritional deficient. but we need more data. we really need to study this, because we know that it can help increase fertility before. pregnancy. so a good reminder. women need to be on contraception if they're using a glp before pregnancy. dr rachel spook, thank you so much we appreciate you, thank you all right ahead. a scam involving
