So if the federal government and the Supreme Court enable corporations to influence elections, states can counter that merely by changing the definition of a corporation. And that’s precisely what Hawaii did. Effective starting July 2027, corporations doing business in the state are redefined to “not include the power to spend money or contribute anything of value to influence elections or ballot measures.” The novel approach is well-protected against legal challenges.

DOGE fired the regulators, hollowed out the agencies, and dismantled the oversight structures that might otherwise have asked awkward questions of his own companies.

And it is scaling fast. DoorDash, which now operates in 30 countries, reported global revenue growth of 38 percent from the same period the previous year in the fourth quarter of 2025, and Uber, operational in about 70 countries, ranked ninth on Fortune’s 2025 list of the 100 fastest-growing public companies, with earnings per share growing 445 percent over three years. These companies create value by shifting costs off the company’s books and onto everyone else.

Again and again, voters in red, blue, and purple states alike have passed measures to raise their minimum wages. In the last decade or so, voters have approved minimum-wage increases in about a dozen states, including Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Maine, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Washington, plus D.C. In early 2024, Oklahomans turned to the state’s initiative petition process as well. Over 150,00 voters signed a petition to place State Question 832 on the ballot.

For Black people specifically, while gig work has helped build wealth, it hasn’t measurably closed the racial wealth gap and it is hurting work-life balance. The Black community is often leveraging gig work on top of full-time work and now, in the age of surveillance wages, even this good deed does not go unpunished.

However, in Mexico it will leave behind a trail of socioeconomic blows, including huge debts the government has incurred to host it.
