NANAIMO — A BC Supreme Court justice sided with a homeowner who made unpermitted additions to his home, while the City of Nanaimo continues pushing for compliance. A recent ruling from justice Wendy Baker rejected a City of Nanaimo contempt application against Yan Bernier, who made multiple additions to his Harewood home without the required building permit.

NANAIMO — The Clippers struggles against the Spruce Kings continued with a 5-1 loss on Nov. 19. Nanaimo has an 0-3 record against Prince George and have been outscored 21-10. It was a fast start for the Clippers in the latest contest with Sam Boisvert scoring inside the first four minutes of the game. But that was all the offense they could muster against first star Ryder Green of the Spruce Kings.

NANAIMO — Being woken up to the sound of his business’s security alarm going off is unfortunately nothing new for one local store manager. Jeremy Daniels with Gold Silver Guy in Nanaimo got the alarm call at 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, and rushed down to their location on Townsite Rd. to find several police already on scene and a large hole smashed into the side of his business used to gain entry. “Nobody inside by the time the cops got here,” said Daniels.

NANAIMO — Direction on the future upgrades to an underdeveloped park on the shores of Long Lake won’t come for at least another week. After hearing from staff, a trio of delegations, and engaging in initial discussions as part of their Finance and Audit Committee meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 19, councillors opted to defer any decision on upgrades to Loudon Park.

QUALICUM BEACH — Thousands of people are getting set to converge on downtown Qualicum Beach for festive cheer and to offer local businesses an early holiday shopping season boost. Hosted by Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce (QBCC) Moonlight Madness takes place Thursday, Nov. 20 between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. The longstanding annual tradition features live music, family-focused entertainment, late-night shopping, and special promotions from downtown businesses.

NANAIMO — A local Christmas tradition for over 40 years is returning to try and brighten the holiday season for some in community. Organizers for the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive have begun accepting donations at a variety of locations throughout the city, with registration for families looking to receive items this Christmas opening Thursday, Nov. 20.

NANAIMO — Strength in numbers may have played a pivotal role in maintaining the safety of a large group of people out for an evening run. Chris O’Grady was one of two runners leading a group of seven on the evening of Monday, Nov. 17, trekking along the Westwood Ridge trail network on the lower southeast slopes of Mount Benson. While on the short connector CTS trail between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., O’Grady stopped for the rest of the group to catch up.

NANAIMO — The always-strong John Barsby high school football program is in line for another provincial title. The junior varsity squad is coming off a 32-0 win in the B.C. quarter finals against Parksville’s Ballenas Secondary, and will next host Mount Douglas in the semi finals on Wednesday, Nov. 19. JV head coach Rob Stevenson said his team is well rounded. We’ve got very good team speed. We’re a disciplined team and we play very complimentary football.

NANAIMO — Local Mounties are asking for the public’s help in locating two men wanted on a number of outstanding charges. Todd Frederick Frost, 52, missed recent court appearances in connection with multiple charges, including four counts of theft under $5,000 and uttering threats. All the alleged offences took place in Nanaimo from early July through to September of this year. Frost is described as 5’11” tall, around 190 pounds, with a bald head and brown eyes.
