Inn on Broadway introduces swanky speakeasy Vanni's
Asking your boss out for drinks is risky. Inviting them to a speakeasy with a secret bookshelf entrance? Now that's just good career strategy. At least, that was my gamble visiting Vanni's, the new jazz lounge inside the Inn on Broadway. With two kids, visiting a bar that's open only three days a week requires intense planning.

The legacy of Fannie Barrier Williams
Brockport scholars honor the famous activist; photos by Michael Hanlon If you’re from Brockport, you probably know about Fannie Barrier Williams. But most of us don’t recognize the name, despite her former status as a national celebrity. Barrier Williams was a suffragist, civil rights leader, orator, and changemaker. She was born and raised in Brockport, and hers was one of the only Black families in the community. In 1870, she would become the first Black woman to graduate from SUNY Brockport.
Underwear archaeology
The sleepover rites of middle-school girls Microscopic shards of ice whizz by my face as my friends Sally and Michelle work to extract a pair of underwear from the freezer in my house. It’s 4 a.m., and we’ve crept into the basement once all our other friends fell asleep. We planned this prank for weeks—freezing someone’s underwear was a classic move out of the Middle School Sleepover Playbook, and we couldn’t wait to try it.
