Age and Ageing is an international journal publishing refereed original research, review articles and editorial pieces on geriatric medicine and clinical gerontology. Its scope includes applied and clinical research on human ageing and clinical, epidemiological and psychological aspects of later life, medical education and service improvement. We place particular emphasis on material which will be of immediate interest to clinicians. We rarely publish analyses of epidemiological studies where the clinical, health policy or educational implications are not clear. We do not publish in vitro or animal studies.

Abstract Overactive bladder is common among older women and often managed with antimuscarinic agents. These medications contribute to cumulative anticholinergic burden, which has been associated with adverse outcomes including cognitive decline, cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the association between bladder antimuscarinics and these outcomes in adult women. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following PROSPERO registration.
Association between vaccinations and risk of dementia: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Abstract Dementia is a highly prevalent issue in older people. Whilst the prevention of dementia is a public health priority, the role of vaccinations is still largely unexplored. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate whether common adult vaccinations are associated with a reduced risk of dementia. PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched from inception to 1 January 2025.

Antihypertensive drug classes and risk of incident dementia: a multinational population-based cohort study
Abstract Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ARBs) are first-line antihypertensive drugs for many patients, and influencing angiotensin systems may play a role in dementia risk. This study aimed to investigate whether exposure to different antihypertensive drug classes compared with ACEI affects the risk of dementia and pathological dementia subtypes in a large multinational database study.

Abstract Background Environmental air pollution is increasingly recognised as a potential contributor to frailty. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesise existing evidence on the associations between environmental air pollution and frailty in middle-aged and older adults, providing insights into the impact of air pollution on public health.
Editor’s view-electronic frailty index 2: the sequel
Screening for frailty In the April edition, we publish the eagerly awaited development and validation of the electronic Frailty Index 2 (eFI2) model [1 https://doi.org/10.1093/ageing/afaf077]. Sequels are not usually as good as the original, but EFI2 promises to be an exception. The original EFI was remarkably influential, having been nationally integrated into primary care records throughout much of the United Kingdom as a means of identifying frailty from routinely collected data.
