Television
It was February 15, 1950, when a group of television pioneers went on the air with KEYL. Broadcasting from what is now called the Tower Life Building, the station began its rich history of serving San Antonio. In 1954, the station was purchased by the Express-News Company and the call letters were changed to KENS, which stood for K-Express-News-Station. For more than 70 years, the people of KENS 5 have strived to be the best, most trusted news and entertainment source for generations of San Antonians. The station brought many firsts to South Texas television, including being the first station with a helicopter, the first with its own Doppler radar and the first to air a morning news program in San Antonio. Today, KENS 5 continues to set the standard in local broadcasting and is recognized by its peers for excellence and innovation. Over the years, KENS 5 has worked to transform local news. An early adopter of the Eyewitness News philosophy, KENS 5 cameras have brought history into San Antonio viewers' homes. Whether KENS 5 was covering Pope John Paul II s visit to San Antonio, or the historic flooding in South Texas, or the annual Fiesta celebrations KENS 5 has gone to great lengths to bring the news home to you. Today, KENS 5 believes in changing the outdated model of local news. When watching KENS 5, you’ll find far fewer fires and car wrecks than traditional newscasts. We focus on what’s really important to our community and that often includes good news and information that you can use about our community. Our signature franchises include Neighborhood Eats, Texas Outdoors and Good Things Happen. Our news brand has been modernized and is affectionately known within the station as The KENS Lens. Source
