ISLA VISTA, Calif. – St. George and Associates are planning a demolition and construction project at 971 Embarcadero Del Mar, in Isla Vista. The property management company is proposing a 35 feet tall and 10,000-square-foot single-room occupancy building. The building is set to be three stories and will have 28 single rooms divided amongst 5 room groups.

UCSB TV joined Robert Downey Jr. on the red carpet during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Feb. 9. Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) Moderator and film critic Leonard Maltin, whom the Maltin Modern Master Award is named after, interviewed Robert Downey Jr. for an hour and a half in celebration of his incredible career.

ISLA VISTA, Calif. — On-campus organizations called for a walkout in solidarity with Palestine on Wednesday, attracting a large group of participants. Leaders of the walkout led the crowd in multiple chants calling for Palestine’s liberation. In a collaborative post on Monday, UCSB Students For Justice For Palestine and the UCSB Muslim Student Association demanded for divestment. The post stated that universities are complicit in the violence.

ISLA VISTA, Calif. — UC Santa Barbara’s Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) alter was created by student artists and their instructor Cherrie Moraga. During their informal presentation, artists highlighted photos, cane sugar, and pan de muertos. Las Maestra’s alter presentation was followed by a reception and panel discussion. Dia de los Muertos alters are Mexican traditions created to honor those who have passed.

ISLA VISTA, Calif. — The Isla Vista Co-Op management team is mourning after deciding to remove their beloved silk oak tassel tree from outside of their store on October 28. The tree – which previously served as a landmark for the co-op – had decayed and posed a risk of branches falling on bystanders in the area. The Co-op’s management team and their Board of Directors are in the works of memorializing the tree. The store hopes to work with local artists to recruit funds for the tribute.

ISLA VISTA, Calif. — Students gathered for 2 hours on November 1st to attend “A World Without Roe: Abortion Politics in a Dystopian Society”. This event was hosted by Students for Reproductive Justice, a branch of The Associated Students Human Rights Board. The event focused on the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Supreme Court Ruling in 2022 that overturned Roe v. Wade. Laury Oaks, UCSB Department of Feminist Studies Chair and Professor, spoke at the event. Watch the episode below!

ISLA VISTA, Calif. — Isla Vista Recreation and Park District hosted their annual Pumpkin Patch in celebration of Halloween on October 29. People from across the Isla Vista and Goleta community turned out to join in on the festivities. Attendees participated in a fun scavenger hunt to restore the spirit of Halloween and help the Pumpkin King escape the purgatory’s pumpkin patch and reunite with his queen. This is not the only Halloween event hosted in Isla Vista.

ISLA VISTA, Calif. — From 10 am-6 pm, students dropped in and out to receive free STI testing and birth control consultations. Professional medical care was provided and made accessible to all Isla Vista community members in attendance. ISLA VISTA, Calif. — On November 9th, Students for Justice of Palestine put up over 2 thousand flags in the colors of the Palestinian flag. Each of these flags had the names of Palestinian children who have been reported missing or deceased.

ISLA VISTA, Calif. — The screening started with Jose Hernandez speaking about his father’s “6 ingredient” steps to being successful. Hernandez discussed his addition of the seventh ingredient of perseverance . This is after applying for NASA 11 times before being accepted for a mission.
