My wait time for new patients is about five weeks, and I’m not alone. I don’t know any of the 400 or so ophthalmologists serving almost 10 million people in Chicagoland who aren’t just as busy or even busier than I am. As the Academy’s Secretary for Global Relations, I find it hard to fathom how 50 ophthalmologists in a country like Guinea can serve a population of 13 million, or how the 60 eye surgeons in Zambia can serve its 20 million citizens.
