Kamala Harris’s history-making potential as the first president of Asian or South Asian origin could be a decisive factor in propelling a record number of Asian Americans to the ballot box.

On September 24, 2024, AAPI Data and Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote) released the findings from a survey of Asian American and Pacific Islander adults, the first since President Biden dropped out of the race and Vice President Harris became the Democratic nominee.

Background The 2018 and 2020 elections saw record increases in voter turnout among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). In 2020, Asian Americans saw a significant double-digit increase in presidential turnout (11 points) and also had the highest midterm turnout gain in 2018, a 14-point increase. In 2020, almost 60% (7.6 million) of the Asian American citizen age voting population turned out.
