Input / Output is a periodic series where artists show how they make music using Ableton Live, Push, Move, or Note, and share easy-to-follow tips and a free download. Portuguese producers Moullinex and GPU Panic work together as MXGPU to fuse electronic music, cinematic visuals and performance into an emotive and immersive 360° experience. On their 2025 debut album Sudden Light, the duo ride the tension between light and dark, chaos and control.

“Performing live is the only way to connect with your audience for real,” said MontrĂ©al-based artist Ouri at this year’s MUTEK festival. “Otherwise, you’re really just existing virtually.” Her words set the tone for an hour-long conversation about approaches to live performance, moderated by Ableton’s Leticia Trandafir.

Brooklyn producers Tony Seltzer and Anysia Kym have long occupied distinct corners of the underground hip-hop and R&B worlds. Seltzer’s been the driving force for a subsection of booming East Coast rap, providing the kinetic soundscapes for emcees like WiFiGawd, YL, and Wiki. Most recently, he collaborated with ascendant New York rapper MIKE for Pinball and Pinball II, records that transform MIKE’s insular style and infuse it with thunderous bass and trap drums.

For many artists, sharing music comes with a certain kind of vulnerability. When we release our work into the world, we put our creative judgment on the line, opening ourselves to scrutiny, interpretation, and critique. Those with a certain kind of temperament may thrive in that space: extroverted, prolific, at ease with the performative rituals of modern self-promotion.

We caught up with Raúl Sotomayor, aka Tonga Conga and one half of duo SOTOMAYOR, to learn how he thinks outside the musical box – whether that’s making a whole song out of one sample, recording percussion with the jaw of a donkey, or experimenting in the studio with Vanessa Zamora, Orestes Gomez, Pahua, and Mabiland.
