The Inquirer and Mirror, also called The I&M, or "The Inky", is the weekly newspaper of record on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. It is published every Thursday morning and has been in continuous publication since 1821. The Inquirer and Mirror also publishes the magazine Nantucket Today.
The Inquirer and Mirror, began as The Inquirer in June 1821 at the height of the island's prominence in the global whaling industry. In 1865 its ownership acquired another newspaper, The Mirror, and the masthead that we know today as The Inquirer and Mirror was born. Source

(July 16, 2026) What’s not to love about Jimmy Buffett’s jaunty tunes and good-time vibes? “Escape to Margaritaville,” Theatre Workshop of Nantucket’s summer musical production, checks all the boxes: talented leads with sterling voices, breezy staging and some surprisingly touching moments of quiet reflection. The show, with book by Greg Garcia and Mike O’Malley, stitches together an assortment of Buffett’s best-known songs in a patchwork quilt of a plot.
Dolphins entertain off Cliffside
(July 16, 2026) The current moon phase is a waxing crescent, the first phase after the new moon. It’s said to be a great time to look for the features of the moon’s surface, best seen in the west after the sun dips below the horizon at sunset. The tides have been extreme post-new moon, stretching to nearly four and a half feet. The water temperature in the harbor is around 75 degrees, perfect for any shoreline-based activity.

Good Reads: “The Alchemist”
{p class=”p1”}(July 16, 2026) This might be my favorite book of all time. I was in a very unstable, transitional phase of uncertainty and personal trouble in my life when I first picked it up, and it could not have found me at a better moment. Within “The Alchemist,” by Paulo Coelho, I was able to go on a journey I would have never been able to go on in my own life.

Rare Black Terns spotted in Madaket
(July 16, 2026) A single adult Black Tern was a treat in Madaket July 12. The week before, a flock of about 30 had been seen on Tuckernuck, but only three were in breeding plumage. But it is still early. Although they require a bit of searching, we can usually still find some into early September. Black Terns are an anomaly among the other tern species gathering on our mudflats and sandbars.
Inshore fishery not exactly on fire
(July 16, 2026) Man, do I have no idea what’s happening with this fishery. There are days when it’s absolutely fantastic, and there are days when I just scratch my head. Overall though, the last week has been a challenge for most inshore anglers, so if you haven’t been catching, you are definitely not alone. There is some good news. We were finally blessed with a really solid push of bluefish on the east and southeast sides of the island.

Massachusetts needs a shield law. The clock is ticking
(July 16, 2026) When a government whistleblower risks a career to expose corruption to a journalist, the first question is always the same: Will my name be kept out of it? The same is true when a hospital employee reveals a cover-up, when a church insider exposes abuse or when a corporate source provides evidence that a company has concealed the dangers of its products.
