ACLU of Northern California
Online/Digital
The ACLU of Northern California, founded in 1934, is an affiliate of the national ACLU, which was founded in 1920, to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. We are non‐profit and non‐partisan. Since its founding, the ACLU has been at the forefront of advancing and protecting the individual civil rights and civil liberties enumerated in our Constitution. The ACLU stands up for these rights even when the cause is unpopular, and sometimes when few others will. We recognize that every person is ultimately at risk of having their rights and liberty taken away by an anti‐democratic government, while also understanding that certain communities bear the brunt of government abuse today and will in the future. Inside ACLU NorCal’s Training Program to Empower Immigrant Communities to Take Action
For much of his life, Luis Ojeda, interim organizing director at the ACLU of Northern California, heard the message given to countless immigrants and undocumented people: stay quiet, keep a low profile, and don’t draw attention to yourself. Fear, he’d been taught, was the safest strategy. But in college, while working alongside other immigrant youth advocating for the DREAM Act, Luis discovered a new approach — one that prioritized visibility and collective action over isolation and fear.

Be prepared. Know your rights.
This is America under Donald Trump. On Thursday, the Trump administration sent federal immigration agents to the Bay Area. They fired flash bangs at peaceful protesters. This is a flagrant abuse of power and an attack on free speech intended to instill fear, target Trump’s political opponents, and silence anyone who does not agree with him. For now, Trump say he will not send the National Guard to San Francisco like he had been threatening to do. That is certainly welcome news.
