Vancouver Whitecaps put on a second half clinic in a dominant display to see off Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC 4-1, in their Canadian Championship quarter-final first leg clash at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby on Wednesday. An Adam Pearlman own goal with just over a minute on the clock set the tone for the evening, as the Whitecaps’ constant pressure saw Cavalry be unable to be the free flowing footballing side we see in the CPL on a weekly basis.

Canada’s home field advantage at this World Cup came to an agonizing end at BC Place on Wednesday afternoon after a strong start to the second half saw Switzerland come away with a 2-1 victory to finish top of Group B and stay in Vancouver for the Round of 32. The result means Canada will now play their first ever knockout round match in Los Angeles and will surprisingly face South Africa, after Bafana Bafana stunned South Korea to finish second in their group later in the day.

History was made at BC Place in Vancouver on Thursday afternoon as Canada turned on the style, and the goals, in a 6-0 rout of Qatar, who finished the match with nine men after two straight red cards. Jonathan David’s hat-trick saw Canada secure their first ever win at the World Cup, and the biggest ever win by a CONCACAF nation at the tournament, to all but guarantee their place in the knockout round, with first place in the group also now in their own hands.
