By Tony Farley, CEO AHHA LTD Australia’s public hospitals are severely underfunded, and if you are in any doubt, just speak to hospital staff, patients and their families to comprehend how deep this crisis has become. Like a frog in boiling water, we’ve watched our world-class public hospitals be pushed to the brink by funding that has not kept pace with demand. Frontline hospital staff are some of the hardest workers in the country, but even they have a breaking point.

‘Value-based health care isn’t just about doing things more efficiently, it’s about making sure every decision, every service, reflects what truly matters to patients and communities,’ said Tony Farley, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA).

‘Oral healthcare is one of Australia’s biggest out-of-pocket health expenses, and the system is failing too many Australians,’ said Australian Healthcare and Hospital Association Limited’s (AHHA Ltd) Chief Executive Tony Farley.

Australia’s healthcare system, like many other industries and services, is a significant contributor to national greenhouse gas emissions. Yet we still don’t consistently measure or assess the environmental cost of healthcare design and delivery.

The Australian Healthcare and Hospital Association would like to congratulate the outgoing Deeble Institute for Health Policy Research Advisory Board Chair, Deakin Distinguished Professor Anna Peeters AM PhD, as she takes up the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth). Professor Peeters is internationally recognised for her work building the evidence for effective and equitable policy and practice to improve health outcomes.

The final issue of the Australian Health Review for 2024 explores key issues shaping the future of Australia’s healthcare system, including the integration of innovative care models, the role of digital technologies, and strategies for workforce sustainability.

The Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA) is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Board Members at the 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM). ‘We are delighted to welcome Nicole Bartholomeusz, CEO of coHealth and Annette Crothers, Chair and founding director of Marathon Health, as newly elected members of the AHHA Board,’ says AHHA Chief Executive Kylie Woolcock.
