MARIE, ON – September 21, 2026) Algoma University is honoured to announce a transformative $1.5 million gift from the Joyce Family Foundation, that will provide new bursary support to first-year local students from the region who demonstrate financial need and personal resilience. Last year, Algoma University supported nearly 4,000 students and awarded more than $9 million in scholarships, bursaries, and awards.

MARIE, ON – September 10, 2026) A 1965 ship’s engineer log preserved in the Algoma University Archives is providing Algoma U researchers a rare window into Great Lakes water temperatures, creating a valuable historical baseline for understanding the effect of climate change. The data could help researchers compare past and present water temperatures and improve models used to understand how climate change is affecting the Great Lakes.

For Meggie Opala, the journey to becoming one of Sault Ste. Marie’s top real estate and estate planning lawyers began right here at Algoma University. A 2016 graduate of the Honours Bachelor of Arts in Law & Justice program, Meggie has successfully turned her passion for the law into a thriving local practice, all while staying deeply connected to her roots.

MARIE, ON – July 21, 2026) The Institute of Peoples, Territories, and Pedagogies for Peace (IPTP) in collaboration with the Department of Community Economic and Social Development (CESD) of the Faculty of Cross-Cultural Studies (FCCS) at Algoma University, recently welcomed a delegation of Indigenous and Afro-descendant educators, activists and community leaders from Colombia as part of an international initiative focused on grassroots diplomacy, economic sovereignty and trade.

For many, the path to university is a straight line from high school. For Dana Simpson, it was a winding adventure filled with surf, snow, and working in the trades. Today, she is a PhD student tackling some of the most profound questions in healthcare access and end-of-life care. Her journey proves that it is never too late to pivot—and that Algoma University is the perfect place to do it. By age 29, Dana was working as an electrical apprentice.

Participating Algoma U student also earns Best Debater Award (BRAMPTON, ON – July 14, 2026) A team of students from Algoma University’s Faculty of Business and Professional Studies has recently earned first place at the virtual 2026 IvyBiz Global Case Debate Competition, an international competition that brings together students from across Canada and around the world to analyze and debate complex business cases.
