MARIE, ON – July 21, 2026) The Institute of Peoples, Territories, and Pedagogies for Peace (IPTP) in collaboration with the Department of Community Economic and Social Development (CESD) of the Faculty of Cross-Cultural Studies (FCCS) at Algoma University, recently welcomed a delegation of Indigenous and Afro-descendant educators, activists and community leaders from Colombia as part of an international initiative focused on grassroots diplomacy, economic sovereignty and trade.

For many, the path to university is a straight line from high school. For Dana Simpson, it was a winding adventure filled with surf, snow, and working in the trades. Today, she is a PhD student tackling some of the most profound questions in healthcare access and end-of-life care. Her journey proves that it is never too late to pivot—and that Algoma University is the perfect place to do it. By age 29, Dana was working as an electrical apprentice.

Participating Algoma U student also earns Best Debater Award (BRAMPTON, ON – July 14, 2026) A team of students from Algoma University’s Faculty of Business and Professional Studies has recently earned first place at the virtual 2026 IvyBiz Global Case Debate Competition, an international competition that brings together students from across Canada and around the world to analyze and debate complex business cases.

Rhodes Scholarship Dinner, presented by Applyboard. The annual event will be taking place on October 22, 2026. For nearly a century, the Stone family has helped shape the social, cultural, philanthropic, and business landscape of Sault Ste. Marie.

Participants rallied to raise funds for scholarships and bursaries at Algoma University, significantly impacting local students’ lives.

Strengthening Indigenous student and community space at Algoma University Algoma University has recently recognized the Mirkopoulos family and their generous $50,000 contribution in support of Makwa Waakaa’igan. The presentation highlighted the importance of partnership and shared responsibility in advancing Indigenous education, reconciliation, and community wellbeing.

The Algoma University Emerging Leader Alumni Award recognizes the accomplishments of an Alumni who demonstrates exceptional early-career achievements, leadership potential, and a strong promise for future impact. The 2026 Emerging Leader Award is proudly presented to Christopher Thompson (BA ’19). Thompson graduated cum laude from the Law and Justice program at Algoma University, an experience that deeply rooted him in the close-knit culture of the Algoma District.
