A pair of Alliance teams battled Wednesday when the Spuds took on the Aces. Using a five run second inning, it was the Spuds getting the win 12 to 10. The Aces rallied late with 6 in their final at bat to get close. Leading the Aces at the plate was Ben Smith who had 2 of their 6 knocks. Top slugger for the Spuds was Luke Clarke who ended with 3 hits including a homer.

Day two of the Sidney baseball tournament had the Alliance Blue Sox facing off against the Panhandle Storm. Strong starting pitching by Sox’s Zeke Dean lead Alliance past PH 9 to 1. Dean went three solid frames, striking out 6 while walking 0. Eugenio Lopez tossed the final 2 and had 3 Ks. The Peltz Co closed the contest with 5 hits. Alliance went to the plate first and found success. The Sox scored twice. Canton Devlin had a single to start the rally. Next up was Bodee Barber who was hit by a pitch.

A nine run third inning was just enough for the Alliance Spuds Saturday in their game against the Panhandle Storm. Alliance won the contest 13 to 11. Down 6 to 0 in the first, the Spuds rallied in posting the victory. Three Spuds pitched. They were starter Ridge Toedtli and relievers Jensen Freiberger and Luke Clarke. They combined for 7 strikeouts. Clarke had 2 of the 7 hits for Alliance. Bats for the Storms came out hot in the first. PH used six hits and a couple of passed balls to surge ahead 6 to 0.

Baseball play on Saturday had the Alliance Spuds taking on the Regulators. In a very close contest, it was the Spuds falling 9 to 7. Alliance got to within one in the third inning but ran out of time. The Spuds had four hits on the night. Taking the hill was starter Leo Hager and relief hurler Jon Luke. Alliance hit first and plated a run as Luke Clarke walked and later stole home. Gordon came back strong in the bottom of the first. The Regulators scored 5 times to go up by 4.

Four tallies in the first, second, and fourth innings powered the Expos past the Aces in action on Saturday. Alliance led 6 to 0 and 7 to 4 before Westco came storming back to win 14 to 7. The Aces closed with 8 hits and were lead by Joseph Vela and Andre Acosta who ended with 2 each. Lincoln Foster started for the Aces with Vela coming in as a reliever. Vela had 3 strikeouts. Alliance was up first and came out slugging.

UNMC Congratulates More than 1,000 Graduates in Commencement Ceremonies Events were held in Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk, Kearney and Scottsbluff Diplomas and certificates were conferred on more than 1,000 University of Nebraska Medical Center students during ceremonies held May 7 in Lincoln, Norfolk and Kearney and May 9 in Omaha and Scottsbluff. Security First Bank recently donated $1,000 to Alliance Public Schools to support the remodel of the A Club concession stand. The donation will help purchase needed supplies and equipment, with any remaining funds going towards student scholarships. “At Security First Bank, investing in our communities is at the heart of what we do,” said Serena Bremer, Branch Manager.

130 Years Ago July 17, 1896 The Alliance cemetery association is sparing no efforts to beautify the city of the dead, having purchased a windmill and tank, which were placed upon the grounds this week, that the shrubbery and plants might be irrigated. It is a step in the right direction and those who have departed ones resting there must feel a deep sense of gratitude. 125 Years Ago July 19, 1901 Two carloads of buggies were ordered by Alliance dealers this week, through Alf. B.

United Way of Western Nebraska’s annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive is gearing up to help local students start the school year prepared for success. The community-wide drive will run July 15 through July 31 and is designed to assist children and families who may be unable to purchase the school supplies needed for the upcoming school year. Community members are encouraged to donate new school supplies or make a monetary contribution.
