This year (2026), the Lunar New Year is on Tuesday, February 17 and is the year of the Fire Horse! You know how there are kids who really love horses? Like REALLY love them. There are dog people and cat people and then there are HORSE people and those people will spend all day mucking stables just so that they can be near these amazing majestic creatures… I am not one of those kids. However that doesn’t mean I haven’t always wanted a horse mask.

It’s tradition. Every year about this time I make a Lunar New Year (this year– 2026–  it’s February 16) printable. Last year, we made a dragon puppet but this year we are back into making paper animals. Why? Because they are fun! It’s the Year of the Fire Horse so we’re making paper horses. Neigh! Neigh! This year, 2025, Daylight’s Savings Time begins at 2 am on Sunday, March 9th, and lasts through Sunday, November 2nd. Celebrating Day Light Savings Craft & How to Teach your Child to Tell Time Setting all the clocks an hour earlier for Daylight Savings Time can sometimes be sort of a pain. I usually forget to do it myself—until I show up an hour late for church, that’s always fun. This year I thought I’d get a jump on the chore and make it into a fun activity for kids.

We like making Mardi Gras masks around here, because it gives you the chance to use up all the rogue odds and ends of craft supplies that you have lurking about from other projects throughout the year. Left over valentine heart stickers, a few feathers and pipe cleaners, random pom poms and sequins, not to mention unusual left overs like zip ties. It’s also a good chance to dig in the pile of recycling to pull out cardboard and plastic items that can be re-purposed.

When my son entered preschool all the parents received a note from the school’s director informing of us of the policy for Valentine’s Cards that year. In the spirit of inclusiveness, if your child was bringing in valentines to distribute, either every child in the class would get one or none. I respect that policy! And, thus, was my inauguration into the madness of school valentines.

The Lunar New Year is Wednesday, January 25th 2025 this year and is right around the corner.

After being a part of the adoption process firsthand, I now understand that whether we gain the parents we have through biology or biography, the end result can be the same- a happy family.
