American Thinker recently laid out the disturbing facts of the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident in unusually concrete terms. That matters because this episode gives the AI debate something it has often lacked: evidence from an actual, sustained intrusion rather than speculation about a distant superintelligence.

As we enter general election season, we have disruptions in the news and in the economy: a nagging USA-Canada trade war that seems to accelerate at the worst possible times. In August, the Canadians walked away from a trade agreement to which their negotiators had already agreed, when Prime Minister Mark Carney recalled them specifically to create a fight.

When pundits say that the United States — or the West, more generally — is “in decline,” what do they mean? Are they talking about Western nations’ rising and unsustainable sovereign debts, including a U.S. national debt of over forty trillion dollars? Are they acknowledging that forty-plus years of “free trade deals” have hollowed out once-bustling manufacturing and industrial towns and left tens of millions of blue-collar workers unemployed and dependent upon government welfare?

There’s an amusing video circulating around the information superhighway showing President Trump whooping Canadian Mark Carney up one side and down the other with a hockey stick. He’s also whooping them with whopping tariffs, including on hockey-related equipment. I predict that stroppy Canadians will boo our national anthem at upcoming hockey games. Let’s nip this in the bud.

It’s been nearly twenty-five years since I wrote the story of my struggles to locate an American flag on sale, anywhere, in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Those days when everyone seemed to walk around staring at something a thousand yards away, as if we were all trying to make sense of something that we couldn’t wrap our minds around. If you are old enough, you know exactly what I am talking about: the sense that even the world had somehow lowered its volume in respect.

The official name of the CDC is the Centers for Disease Control “and Prevention.” Tasked with prevention of disease is an agency that does not appear in the CDC’s flow chart, the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS).

Let me tell you about Simon & Garfunkel. They had a great run back in the 1960s and broke up after "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Paul and Art had some solo hits but not much lately. My last Garfunkel cassette was from the early 1980's. Memories, yes; recent success, not much. So, Art has decided that he needs to make a political statement. About what? Well, it turns out that (shock, shock, shock) Art does not like Trump.

My wife and I retired from teaching in May of 2020. Our final semester was obliterated by a COVID shutdown. We pretended to teach from a distance, and our students pretended to learn. It was a dishonorable end to an honorable career, but beyond our control. During that mostly happy career, I struggled with student plagiarism. All English teachers did in those days of yesteryear. One of my favorites was a young man who stole a friend’s research paper word for word.
