The War on Poverty did not announce itself as a bedroom policy. It announced itself as compassion. A problem was named. A class was recognized. A category was written. A check followed. Sixty years later, the check is still there, and so is the category. That is the sequence. Identify, classify, compensate, regulate, repeat. Once the state pays for a private obligation, it acquires a reason to define the obligation. Payment is not a visit; it is occupancy.

It doesn’t matter what side of the aisle you’re on when it comes to cancer, and cancer doesn’t care about politics. Perhaps that’s why for decades, fighting back against cancer has transcended partisan divides between Democrats and Republicans. Despite this bipartisan alignment, the federal government’s progress in this effort has never quite matched its ambitious rhetoric.

Six months ago, American and Israeli aircraft did something no summit or sanctions collective had managed in nearly five decades: they took out the Supreme Leader of Iran. On February 28, a joint strike in Tehran ended the life of Ali Khamenei, along with dozens of the regime’s senior military and intelligence officials. It was billed as the opening move of regime change. Six months later, Iran is still a theocracy. The man who now sits in Khamenei’s old office is Khamenei’s own son.

The questions about the assimilation of Muslim communities in this country are becoming more, not less, controversial over time. Some people insist that Muslims are blending much better into our communities than in the past; other people feel certain that there will always be a division between our mainstream culture and the many cultures of Islam. Who is to be believed, and how critical are the conclusions we draw?

Powerline, a blog started by Minnesota lawyers, remains a daily go-to for thoughtful readers. Scott Johnson, on Labor Day, tells us the hardest-working, most fully employed states are all red states. The top state is…South Dakota, followed by North Dakota, Alaska, Hawaii, and Wyoming. I’d argue about Wyoming’s 5th place. Having lived in Wyoming most of my adult life, I’m amazed it isn’t ranked first.

We’re all pretty familiar with the culture of deception that has infected much of today’s news media. Some of this is cynically driven by overt ideological agendas. Some is also the result of ingrained bias on the part of the compilers and presenters of “information” about current events, being largely imparted by the modern J schools that train and “certify” our journalists.

I was a sprinter on my high school track team for all three years. That was so long ago; the track was cinder, and races were measured in yards. I did the 220, 440, and the 880 and mile relays. I tried the 100, but I didn’t pass the shorter guys with short legs until just before the finish line, which made the coaches nervous, so it was back to longer distances. Those were good days, except I suffered from brutal shin splints every track season.

President Trump recently shared a humorous social media post musing about changing the State of New Mexico's name. The Troller-in-Chief’s message, posted on Truth Social, reads, "Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA. So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State.

As you probably know, Germany held some consequential elections over the last few days. They tell us that the Far-right AfD won a historic victory in German state elections. This is sort of a German version of MAGA that wants to Make Germany Great Again. As you can imagine, they are being called a "far-right" party that wants to bring Hitler's racial purity back, or some crazy stuff like that.

With the midterms and 2028 looming like a cloud of uncertainty, the Democrats have called on their most esteemed persuader, Barack Hussein Obama. Like Whac-A-Mole, the man who should be retired keeps popping up everywhere, doling out pointers on how redistricting could deliver a Democrat victory from the jaws of defeat. Why Obama? Because this is a man whose favorite topic is that anyone or anything threatening Democrat control of America is the antithesis of his own stilted vision of democracy.
