This post is also available in العربية Photo Credits: Scenius Hub On a cloudy afternoon in Juba, the air is thick with humidity and the smell of rain. A day that seemed to be like any other day. In a veranda inside Scenius Hub, rhythms of keyboards change the atmosphere. Seventeen young women aged 18 to 30 sit hunched over glowing screens. They were not scrolling through social media, they were building neural networks.

This is the second part of "Art, Space, and Everything In-between" a series that explore the experiences and processes of art and the space in which it is made. It follows the first cohort of artists in residency at 32° East's new home in Kabalagala, Kampala. The narration is from the perspective of one of the artists Rebecca Khamala, as she takes us through her process of creation to her interactions with the other artists in residence and their work. Since the outbreak of war in Sudan in 2023, the country entered one of the largest and most severe humanitarian crises in its modern history. Social, economic, and political life has been profoundly disrupted, while many systems collapsed, including family support structures and sources of income. Food supplies have been disrupted, the humanitarian crisis escalated, and people faced acute challenges in accessing food and water as markets shut down and the prices of basic commodities skyrocketed.

This post is also available in العربية In a survey I published on social media at the end of 2025 to inform this report, 73% of the Sudanese women who participated said they had been subjected to violence on social media because of their political views, while 78% confirmed that this violence had increased significantly after the April 15 war. Yet the most telling figure was not the scale of the violence, but the scale of the silence: about 48% of the victims did not report what they had endured.

This post is also available in العربية Buyende and Kamuli districts in Busoga region of eastern Uganda, are part of the country’s rangelands, also known as the cattle corridor, where the agro-pastoral communities are adapting strategies to sustain their livelihoods. They learn through the Farmer Field Schools, grow pasture species, invest in water sources, and adopt improved seed varieties.

In war, it is not only geography that is reshaped; daily life as a whole is reorganized, including women’s relationships with their own bodies. Displacement does not simply mean losing one’s home, but losing a system of privacy, choice, and control over the small details that make life livable.

Food is the essence of life. Good food is a form of art and a representation of history, culture and individuality. Since the beginning of time mankind has always struggled with finding ways to survive and with time, they attached their survival instincts to beauty. Then just like that things changed. Food became more meaningful, something to celebrate, to enjoy and to unify. Varieties of food flavors, aromas can all be expressed as experiences unique to ourselves but embraced universally.

This post is also available in العربية The Ujamaa policy was introduced by President Julius K. Nyerere in 1967, just 6 years after the Tanzanian Independence on 9th December 1961. The Ujamaa policy was introduced as a means to bring back the power of the people that was taken away from them for decades. This policy stood for the right for cooperative economics, this simply meant the locals cooperated together to provide essential living conditions, and socio-economic growth.

The effects of shelling and explosions are not the only marks left on a person to remind them of war. There are also psychological and emotional wounds that accompany them; sometimes manifesting in pain deeper than that caused by physical destruction. The impact of the April war in Sudan has extended into the most intimate structure of society: the family.
