Over the past twenty-four hours, people have had lots to say about Lindsey Graham, former senior Senator from South Carolina who died over the weekend. I lived in South Carolina for fifty-two years. He was my senior Senator since 2002, and I haven’t said much. Human beings are still being disappeared to the tune of 2,000 per day. Russ Vought is still destroying the federal government while his boss loots it. Billionaires are still coordinating with regime traitors to rig the midterms.

What gave me HOPE this week: I’m sharing one news-related hope and one personal hope. News-related HOPE: US District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, who presided over E. Jean Carroll’s lawsuits against undear leader for assaulting and defaming her. Judge Kaplan is showing every American how to be a patriot: By upholding the rule of law, no matter the personal cost. Freedom is threaded through citizens like Judge Kaplan. Every person like him gives me hope.

It has survived revolutions, sabotage, terror attacks, and at least one bloody mutiny, but it keeps sailing. It might take on water now and again, but it doesn’t sink. It’s an imperfect vessel. Much of the crew lives in the ship’s bowels with no windows and scant glimpses of sunlight. Workers on higher decks make it their mission to enforce those barriers.
