If you need me, you can find me at the beach! Earlier this week, I did a little road trip from Springs to Quogue and back again. Springs and Quogue are both part of the Hamptons, but the two towns are at opposite ends of this long eastern stretch of Long Island, and my geographic radius tends to get pretty small in these summer days (the beach, the coffee shop, the library, the pizza place) and so I feel justified in calling it a road trip. I was spending the day in Quogue seeing a few friends.

Hi, friends! A quick note from me, before we get into it. Today’s newsletter is the first in what I hope will become an ongoing mini-series about the writing life. Talking shop with fellow writers is one of my favorite things in the world. I get so much out of those conversations—they always, without fail, help me to better understand my own process—and it struck me that other people out there might also get something out of them.

The guilt has been a lowkey but persistent presence ever since I first started writing a newsletter almost three years ago. I have been bad, very bad, about sticking to any kind of publishing schedule. At first I thought I’d find a cadence that felt both feasible and challenging; a goal that would require me to stretch myself just the right amount. Did this mean publishing a newsletter once a month? Once a week? Once every two weeks?
