Consumer confidence pulls back
Consumer confidence fell 1.9pts last week to 72.0pts. The four-week moving average dropped 1.4pts to 73.2pts. ‘Weekly inflation expectations’ rose 0.2ppt to 6.1%, while the four-week moving average was unchanged at 6.1%. ‘Current financial conditions’ (over the last year) increased 2.5pts, and ‘future financial conditions’ (next 12 months) decreased 0.8pts. ‘Short-term economic confidence’ (next 12 months) was down 5.5pts, while ‘medium-term economic confidence’ (next five years) declined 1.8pts.
Tight supply supports lamb market outlook
Tight sheep and lamb supply is shaping Australia's sheep industry, with slaughter numbers significantly lower than a year ago and recent widespread rainfall likely to influence producer decision-making this spring. According to ANZ's latest Agri InFocus report, lamb slaughter is down more than 13 per cent year-on-year, while mutton throughput has fallen 38 per cent as reduced breeding ewe numbers and ongoing ewe retention continue to constrain supply.

According to ANZ’s latest Agri InFocus report, dry conditions across the United States and Europe have reduced production prospects, particularly for high-protein wheat, while escalating conflict in the Black Sea region has restricted exports from both Ukraine and Russia.

The four-week moving average dropped 0.8pts to 75.2pts. ‘Weekly inflation expectations’ rose 0.2ppt to 6.3%, while the four-week moving average ticked up 0.1ppt to 6.1%. ‘Current financial conditions’ (over the last year) was down 7.5pts, and ‘future financial conditions’ (next 12 months) declined 2.4pts.
Job Ads see another rise
ANZ-Indeed Australian Job Ads rose 2.5% m/m in August after an upwardly revised 1.9% m/m increase in July. In trend terms, the series lifted 1.9% m/m and is up 7.7% in annual terms. ANZ prepares to welcome Suncorp Bank customers
Suncorp Bank has today started writing to its customers about their journey as Suncorp Bank becomes ANZ. This is the first official correspondence with customers and marks an important milestone in bringing the two banks together under the ANZ brand. The journey will see Suncorp Bank customers move to ANZ's banking systems, services and digital platforms by June 2027, supported by dedicated communication and guidance.
