The Recruitment Network (TRN) and the Federation of African Professional Staffing Organisations (APSO) have announced a strategic partnership designed to support recruitment businesses in South Africa through a combination of professional standards, performance frameworks, and practical operational tools.
A KPMG survey of 1,019 professionals found that 57 percent would choose a job paying 10 percent below market with close workplace friendships over one paying 10 percent above market without them-placing human connection above a 20-point difference in pay.
KPMG’s hypothetical job profiles suggest close workplace relationships can outweigh a large salary gap, but the result is not evidence that friendship can replace fair pay. Ajob paying 10 percent above market appears, on paper, to have an obvious advantage over one paying 10 percent below. KPMG asked what happened when the lower-paying role came with close workplace friendships and the higher-paying one came without them. In its preference model, 57 percent chose the first.
New social grant for millions of people in South Africa
The government is actively working to establish a permanent Basic Income Support (BIS) grant, which will replace the Social Relief of Distress grant that goes to over 8.2 million people in the country. A new poll from Ipsos shows that 40% of South Africans depend on government grants to survive, with 37% of grant recipients depending on the R370 SRD grant. This is especially true among South Africa’s youth, where 73% of grant recipients depend on the SRD.
TFG commences Section 189 process
Head office roles could be affected, but questions linger about manufacturing units. Retail major The Foschini Group Limited (TFG), the owner of around 40 brands across three markets, has commenced a formal consultation process under Section 189A of the Labour Relations Act that could see retrenchments of some of its South African staff. Staff were notified of the restructuring process last week, and TFG confirmed to Moneyweb that the process is under way.

It's Time to Move Our Finish Line
False! Most of us in learning and talent development know better. We know that a formal course is only one part of the learning process. The skills introduced or reinforced in the course require practice and application afterwards to truly embed them into our daily lives. This transfer of learning from the classroom (or eLearning) to real-life application can take days, weeks, or even months. The end of the formal course should be the starting line, not the finish line.

👀 In the past days I came across the notion of the Personal Retention Plan. In many organizations, senior-level retention planning has been left to the CHRO, sometimes with support from the CEO or board. Per a feature in the Harvard Business Review, top executives aren’t always aware of how frequently their key leaders are considering departure.
