SALISBURY – Salisbury Winter Sports Association has announced the kickoff of its capital campaign to rebuild the Satre Hill ski jumping complex’s 30-meter hill and tower. SWSA officials said the intermediate, or middle hill, of the three-hill complex, which has served thousands of aspiring jumpers for more than 75 years, needs replacement and the landing hill requires updating to comply with modern-day jumping standards.

SOUTHINGTON — State police charged a 44-year-old Hartford man originally from Puerto Rico with manslaughter, evading responsibility and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in connection with the hit and run crash Thursday that killed a state police trooper. Alex Oyola-Sanchez was arraigned from Hartford Hospital on Friday and a judge set his bond at $1.5 million.

My last column, featuring the Wilson’s phalarope, discussed the diversity of the shorebirds, breaking them down into several categories, ranging from the numerous sandpipers and plovers to the phalaropes, in which all of the world’s three species occur in Connecticut. The appearance of a more singular creature now turns my attention in a general way to the northbound – or spring – shorebird migration.

GOSHEN – The Board of Selectmen’s tour of town-owned cemeteries to assess damaged gravestones resumed Friday when First Selectman Todd Carusillo and Selectmen Dexter S. Kinsella and Scott Olson visited Westside Cemetery and West Goshen Cemetery. Gravestones in both cemeteries date to the 1700s. Selectmen began their tour of seven cemeteries earlier in May when they visited God’s Acres Cemetery on Route 63 and East Street North Cemetery. The tour is expected to conclude Friday.
