Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dreams is co-curated by Cecilia Wichmann, BMA Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, and Catharina Manchanda, SAM Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, with support from Leslie Rose, Joyce J. Scott Curatorial Research Assistant. Thu Sep 14 Discussions Join us for an evening of connection and conversation with artists Jackie Milad, Fred Wilson, and Nekisha Durrett prompted by Histories Collide, an exhibition that features new work by Durrett and Milad created in dialogue with Fred Wilson’s sculpture Artemis/Bast (1992) following an open call to artists. The conversation will be moderated by Lisa Graziose Corrin, Ellen Philips Katz Director of The Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University.

As much of a textile as it is a painted canvas or a work on paper, barkcloth—made from the inner bark of trees—confounds Western notions of art. By not fitting neatly into the artistic genres taught in predominantly Euro-American institutions, bark cloth prompts us to question and challenge the structures that shape our surroundings, said Dr. Kevin Tervala, interim Chief Curator.

Baltimore-based artist Jackie Milad has created four new works for the exhibition Histories Collide: Jackie Milad x Fred Wilson x Nekisha Durrett, currently on view in the John Waters Rotunda and adjacent galleries. Milad’s works reconcile and collage together the histories of ancient Egyptians and ancient Americans, her family history, and contemporary culture—from pop culture references to the cultural touchstones of 21st-century Egyptian, Egyptian-diasporic, and Central American peoples.

Listen closely and you will hear snippets of hip-hop greats, jazzy horns, ballroom house beats, and more… in our galleries. The BMA flips (and spins and remixes) the antiquated notion of silent museums by creating a hip-hop soundscape for The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip hop, The Culture captures the extraordinary influence hip hop has had on contemporary society.

Share Feedback Thu Apr 20 After Hours In the fall of 2022, artist Oletha DeVane led six Maryland arts educators through a practice of creating their own spirit sculptures as part of the MSDE Visual Arts Masterclass. Kimberly Brown, Mygenet Harris, Sara Jafari, Samir Razzak, Angela Suggs, and Anna Szot worked closely with DeVane over a period of eight months to develop their spirit sculptures through a personal and cultural lens.
