But if you walk into a modern art museum today, you’re just as likely to see computer code and artificial intelligence as you are a canvas. The medium hasn’t just shifted—it’s turned into software. This isn’t just a tech gimmick; it’s a new way to make visual art and culture.

In 1962, the Institute of American Indian Arts opened on the campus of the Santa Fe Indian School in New Mexico. It was co-founded by Lloyd Kiva New, a Cherokee artist and designer, and Dr. George Boyce, under the auspices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The school’s core philosophy, as New articulated it, was about “celebrating difference”: students would be informed by their Indigenous heritage and artistic traditions but not confined to them. The faculty New assembled was remarkable.

The board of trustees announced this week that Jessica Morgan, the current director of the Dia Art Foundation, will become the tenth director in the museum’s storied history. She will succeed Maria Balshaw on January 1, 2027. For Morgan, this appointment represents a professional homecoming.
