ArtsEquator is a digital media platform which covers arts and culture in Southeast Asia.
Despite the vibrant arts scene in cities like Jogjakarta, Singapore, George Town, Bangkok and Manila, our cultural, aesthetic and historical reference points are often orientated away from Southeast Asia.
Launched in November 2016 by Kathy Rowland and Jenny Daneels, we are a platform for arts writing and criticism in Southeast Asia. ArtsEquator Viewpoints are original articles, podcasts, videos, photo essays and illustrations produced by our team and an international pool of contributors. ArtsEquator Radar features articles and posts drawn from local sites and publications – aggregated content from outside sources that allow us to be exposed to a multitude of voices in the region. ArtsEquator was the first platform in Singapore to produce art-related podcasts. Source

The key findings and analysis of artistic freedom in Vietnam from the Southeast Asia Artistic Freedom RADAR, 2023 – 2024. Between 2023 and 2024, a total of 21 cases of challenges to artistic freedom and cultural practice were recorded in Vietnam—9 in 2023 and 12 in 2024—marking a steady increase compared to previous years. Film and broadcast were the most targeted with 10 cases recorded, followed by music with 6 cases (figure 1).
The Philippines: Artistic Freedom Report 2023 - 2024
In 2022, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. won the Presidential elections in the Philippines, with his running mate Sara Duterte winning for Vice President. The expectation was a continuation of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s policies, including but not limited to the violence of a drug war, the harsh rhetoric against critics, and the continued construction of a climate of fear.
Malaysia: Artistic Freedom Report 2023 - 2024
With 32 cases being targeted post-production, it also highlights an interesting trend of ‘retrospective’ challenges to several works which have been publicly circulated for more than a year (11 cases). Pertinent examples include the seizure of 8 Chinese-language publications from the bookstore Gerakbudaya and the controversy surrounding Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey which has been reprinted 18 times since 2014.
Cambodia: Artistic Freedom Report 2023 - 2024
The key findings and analysis of artistic freedom in Indonesia from the Southeast Asia Artistic Freedom RADAR, 2023 – 2024. The 2023 General Elections in Cambodia witnessed a change in Prime Minister after 38 years – with power passing to his eldest son. While the government reshuffle also saw many other new and younger faces take office, the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, Phoeurng Sackona, remained steady in her position.

The world has been sustained by one mechanism; that which moves our city, our body, our thoughts and existence – Breathing. RawGround 2024 is a ten-day event of curated film screenings, artist talks and workshops connected by the theme: Breathing – the movement of space. Censorship and “Saving Face” In Cambodia
A similar ban was imposed in 2016 on another documentary called I Am Chut Wutty, a 57-minute film co-directed by British filmmakers Fran Lambrick and Vanessa de Smet. Chut Wutty was a prominent Cambodian anti-logging activist and director of the Phnom Penh-based environmental watchdog Natural Resource Protection, which helped expose a secretive state sell-off of national parks.
