What makes a library a place where children feel they belong? For Lilipad, the answer begins with the languages they speak, the stories they recognise and the freedom to express themselves. Working with children in shelters and other community settings, the organisation brings books together with rap, drawing, photography and play. Its first Berlin festival, Untold Stories, opens this work to a wider public, placing children at the centre as readers, artists and storytellers.

To call something “soft power” is to invoke a term long used by US politicians to describe the strategic influence of culture and diplomacy. The phrase can sound benign—suggesting persuasion, attraction or exchange—while obscuring the power relations and political interests that determine who gets to influence whom. Yet as authoritarian forces gain ground in Germany, soft power takes on a different urgency within Berlin’s cultural landscape.

Since the 70s, Mariuccia Secol’s practice has explored women’s labor, care, and forms of resistance to patriarchy. In this conversation, she looks back on the first self-awareness groups of the 1970s, the performances of the Gruppo Immagine in Varese, and the role of refusal, silhouettes, and everyday objects. In her work, Secol weaves together politics, the ethics of care, and materiality.

Behind a semi-transparent surface, powered by exposed cables and USB chargers, 23 smartphones emit a restless glow. The screens flicker with content stripped of narrative importance, reduced to movement, light, and repetition.

How do we find community? What do we find when we find community? What do I find, what do you? And in which forms can we write about the strange shapes that communities take? Part of a longer project, the following text is concerned with collectively, luxury, visibility, changes, identity, and non-identity – especially, perhaps, in settings subsumed under the rather vast label ‘queer’ whose (easy) attachment to ‘community’ may appear beyond all doubt.
