In partnership with Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) provider Guardian Living, Aruma invited Mildura locals to tour three new SDA homes in May. The homes on Riverside Avenue, all three bedroom and four-bathroom homes, have been completed this year and were on show for prospective residents looking for a place to call home. Aruma participant, Roger, recently moved into another Guardian Living SDA home in Mildura and the feedback has been nothing but positive.

A 28-year-old participant from Queensland recently achieved a personal goal of visiting the beach. Water is an important sensory activity that helps with his regulation and one of his strong interests. For many, a trip to the beach is an essential summer activity. But for one of our participants, it’s been something he has been unable to do since childhood. In the past, leaving the house was very limited due to challenging behaviours.

Quirindi Jockey Club hosted their annual Disability & Aged Care Services Day last month, which drew a crowd of excited punters out for a lovely day at the track. Aruma participants took up the opportunity to get all dressed up to see the horses and place a bet or two on the ‘Aruma’ race – the first year we’ve had naming rights for the popular local event.

Today we celebrate the 15th Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). The purpose of the day is to promote digital inclusion and get everyone talking, thinking, and learning about how people with different disabilities experience and navigate the digital world. It’s certainly a consideration that was taken into account during Aruma’s recent website redevelopment.

George had one thing on his weekend wishlist – get to the NRL to watch his team, a win would be the cherry on top. A packed WIN Stadium in Wollongong, a slight breeze and the Storm taking on the Dragons. The perfect Saturday arvo. George made sure the Melbourne Storm knew he had their back, cheering loudly every time Melbourne crossed the line and we’re sure it helped with a 46-20 victory to the Storm.

Families Week recognises the important role families and carers play in our lives and communities. At Aruma, we know there’s no one way to be a family. Families are connected by love, culture, care, friendship and shared experiences. For many families, caring for a loved one is part of everyday life. Picture books are a great way to help children explore what family means, creating conversations about belonging, relationships, and the many ways families are connected.

Last week, our Toowoomba team hosted a free networking event, inviting participants, family members and providers to come together to share learnings and help create a better understanding of stakeholders in the NDIS community. The highly anticipated free event was completely booked out, proving how valuable this offering is in the community.
