ASDWA and the Environmental Protection Agency have released the updated draft agenda for the 2026 Capacity Development and Operator Certification Workshop. The workshop, which will be in Alexandria, Virginia from August 5 – 7, will cover topics like reciprocity, retention and recruitment challenges, systemic non-compliance, and more. On Monday, June 15th, the Environmental Protection Agency released the 2023 National Public Water Systems Compliance Report. The EPA is required to analyze and report on drinking water violations annually per a requirement from the Safe Drinking Water Act.

On June 2, California’s State Water Board issued revised notification and response levels for manganese. Now, the notification level is 0.05 mg/L based on a running annual average, and the response revel is 0.20 mg/L based on a single confirmed detection. In the first step to establish a primary maximum contaminant level for manganese, the Division of Drinking Water requested that the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment establish a manganese Public Health Goal. On May 21, 2026, a new study, “Legionella Occurrence in Buildings: Implications of Public Water System Disinfectant and Residual,” conducted by researchers at Corona Environmental Consulting was published in AWWA Water Science. The study analyzes national Legionella occurrence in building water systems and its relationship to distribution system conditions and building-level factors.

On June 5, ASDWA submitted comments on EPA’s Draft Sixth Contaminant Candidate List (CCL 6). ASDWA worked with its Regulatory Committee to develop the comments. The comments build on ASDWA’s prior comments on the Draft CCL 5, including support for the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) regulatory development process that links the CCL, the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR), regulatory determinations, and the Six-Year Review for prioritizing contaminants for possible national regulation.

On Thursday, May 28th, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced three Science Advisory Board (SAB) Meetings via the Federal Register. In these meetings, the SAB Drinking Water Committee will hear a briefing from the EPA on the proposed Contaminant Candidate List 6 (CCL 6), review the draft contaminant list, and provide input to the EPA on the CCL6. These virtual meetings are scheduled on July 15th, 20th, and 30th, and the registration for them can be accessed here.

On Tuesday, June 16th from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM ET, ASDWA will be hosting Black & Veatch Senior Drinking Water Process Engineers and PFAS Technology Leads Amanda Canida and Adam Feffer, who will walk through the two newly proposed PFAS regulations.
