My focus is largely on technological approaches, but I also often like to estimate consumable and instrument costs (COGS), and discuss how I think products fit into the overall market.

A few folks on LinkedIn are raving about the Atera. To be honest, I don’t have much to say about it. Broadly speaking it seems like a high-throughput version of a spatial instruments 10X already has in many respects. And the information they’ve released publicly about the platform is somewhat limited. But I have a few thoughts.

There’s been a lot of movement around startups in Japan recently. Some of this focuses around the global startup campus. I was think about putting in an application for a Venture Director position associated with this.
PumpkinSeed Protein Sequencing
Yesterday we looked at a new nanopore protein sequencing startup, today we look at a label-free optical approach. This gives further credence to the idea that if you have a good new sensing technology you are now more likely to see that directed to Protein sequencing than DNA sequencing. The company in question is PumpkinSeed. The work appears to be funded by the CZI, Gates Foundation, and Moore Foundation1 but it’s unclear what VC funding the company has received. And I assume they are seed stage.
