At Asylum Matters, we fundamentally oppose the traumatic, costly and ineffective use of force in immigration control. The below statement is a message we’ve sent directly to the Home Office in response to the Government’s consultation on family returns, which asks how it should best expand use of force powers to children. The Home Office is consulting on concerning new plans which could leave children, families, adults and care leavers destitute and homeless. It’s vital that as many people as possible share their knowledge and expertise on the problems that will be created by these plans, which propose to reform support for people once they are appeal rights exhausted.

New migration rules represent a “sustained attack on children’s rights”, say children’s charities, social workers, lawyers and migrants’ rights groups. In a letter to the Prime Minister, nearly 150 children’s charities and organisations working with children warn recently announced Home Office proposals would put hundreds of thousands of children, as well as young adults leaving care, at risk.
