Horizon Europe is the EU’s key fund to support research and innovation, with a budget of more than €95 billion (approximately AU$155 billion). It invests in research and development addressing key areas such as climate change adaptation, AI, and biotechnology. At ATSE’s international CAETS 2025: Generations symposium in Brisbane in September last year, Minister for Science Tim Ayres announced that Australia was exploring signing up to Horizon Europe.

This is a new initiative for ATSE, with rural and remote schools, and schools with higher student disadvantage, receiving science and technology education kits for students and their teachers who would not normally have access to science equipment. Supported by philanthropic donations and support from the community, the aim is for these hands-on educational kits to be in many more Australian schools.

That’s why the ATSE STELR education team have created their first ever primary school kits. STELR is a beloved feature of over a thousand schools around the country and the world, providing hands-on science inquiry kits that help students and their teachers with resources on topics directly relevant to them – energy efficiency, housing, renewable energy and more.

Australia’s tech and engineering academy has welcomed confirmation today that Australia intends to work with the European Union to join Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research funding program, in 2027. The commitment was confirmed today in Federal Parliament by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, as she announced the finalisation of the Europe-Australia Free Trade Agreement.
