The AVMA is a member-run, member-driven association representing the needs and priorities of our diverse member veterinarians. Our operating structure puts members at the heart of organizational decision-making – as members of the councils, committees, and task forces that advise our Board of Directors (BOD) and House of Delegates (HOD). Members in our 11 geographic districts also elect the district directors who serve on the BOD. The HOD make-up embraces state, territorial, and allied veterinary groups, who select its members. This governing structure helps ensure that the AVMA hears, and represents, veterinarians in all disciplines and specialties across our profession. Source

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) says a 153-year-old animal transport law can be improved to better protect livestock. Congress tasked the GAO to assess federal oversight of the interstate transport of livestock as outlined by Twenty-Eight Hour Law. Currently, the federal law states that if livestock are being transported for longer than 28 consecutive hours, they must be offloaded for at least five consecutive hours to get feed, water, and rest, with certain exceptions.
Screwworm detection in Sonora puts planned Arizona port reopening to cattle on watch
After more than a year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a phased reopening of southern U.S. ports of entry to livestock trade starting August 24. The timeline is contingent on continued progress by Mexico and ongoing risk assessments of New World screwworm (NWS). Possibly jeopardizing that progress is the first confirmed case of screwworm reported recently in the Mexican state of Sonora, just south of Arizona.
Pet prescriptions now available at CVS
CVS Health is the latest major retailer to move into the pet prescription space. The retail pharmacy giant said common prescription medications for dogs and cats are now available at about 9,000 CVS Pharmacy locations across the country, according to a July 21 company press release.
