The AVMA is a member-run, member-driven association representing the needs and priorities of our diverse member veterinarians. Our operating structure puts members at the heart of organizational decision-making – as members of the councils, committees, and task forces that advise our Board of Directors (BOD) and House of Delegates (HOD). Members in our 11 geographic districts also elect the district directors who serve on the BOD. The HOD make-up embraces state, territorial, and allied veterinary groups, who select its members. This governing structure helps ensure that the AVMA hears, and represents, veterinarians in all disciplines and specialties across our profession. Source

For the first time since 2022, U.S. veterinary practices' reported average gross revenue rose slightly year-over-year, according to AVMA data.
New veterinary graduates face rising debt, lower real income
By Ashley Mayrianne Champagne and Malinda Larkin For new veterinary graduates, the financial picture has become more challenging as inflation-adjusted income has declined, and student debt has risen. Average real income—or the amount adjusted for inflation—decreased year-over-year for new veterinary graduates, while it climbed for the overall population of veterinarians, expanding the compensation gap between these groups from 19% in 2025 to 28% in 2026.
Education council schedules site visits – October 2026

Event The American Board of Veterinary Toxicology (ABVT)—a veterinary specialty organization recognized by the AVMA American Board of Veterinary Specialties—held a hybrid in-person and virtual annual meeting on July 13 in Anaheim, California. Awards Service Award Dr. Stephen B. Hooser Dr. Stephen B. Hooser (Illinois '82), West Lafayette, Indiana, was recognized for a career that has shaped the field of veterinary toxicology for more than four decades.
In Memory – October 8, 2026
William Dorsey Beam Dr. Beam (Ohio State '65), 87, Greensburg, Pennsylvania, died August 15, 2026. Following graduation, he practiced large animal medicine at The Animal Hospital of Greensburg. Dr. Beam went on to establish Dr. Beam's Animal Hospital, a small animal practice in Greensburg. He retired in 2018. Dr. Beam's wife, Carole; two sons and a daughter; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren survive him. His son-in-law, Dr. Edward E.
Dogs still reign, but cats are closing the gap, AVMA data show
New pet acquisitions and pet population data show a growing interest in cats, but dogs still outnumber cats overall and account for a larger share of pet acquisitions. The U.S. pet dog population reached 88.9 million in 2026, compared with 76.8 million in 2016, while the pet cat population reached 77 million in 2026, versus 58.3 million in 2016.
First aid guidelines for dogs, cats address critical prehospital period
The Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation (RECOVER) Initiative has published the first evidence- and consensus-based guidelines on first aid in dogs and cats to equip veterinary teams to teach dog and cat owners, first responders, and others how to react in life-or-death situations for these animals.
AVMA Veterinary Business and Economic Forum returns online October 7–8, featuring new pet demographic data and team-focused keynotes

Another port reopens to cattle from Mexico amid NWS cases nearby
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is continuing its phased reopening of Southern ports to Mexican livestock imports. On September 24, the port of entry in Santa Teresa, New Mexico—located near El Paso, Texas—reopened to feeder cattle from San Jerónimo, Chihuahua.
